Stephen Matthew Brown is a Canadian poet living in Mexico City. His most recent work investigates the (inter)textualities of psychogeographic urban life on the mind-body of both the city and the occupants-of. He teaches English as a second language.
Is there a specific moment that inspired you to pursue poetry?
My highschool girlfriend moved to another city for first year, in the mid 90’s. Besides phone calls, we wrote each other posted letters. Making the letter, even though I had had no interest in writing beforehand, so much, made me. Making letters, that someone else will receive and read, alone, and to her. That inspired me to want to learn to do it better.
How/where do you find inspiration today?
This is a city poem. And this book where it comes from comes from the streets. A good balance too though in wood working, manual labour.
