The Mahoning River originates in Ohio and joins the Beaver River, a tributary of the Allegheny, in Pennsylvania. In the opening section of eleven poems, Moritz describes "another Egypt, of another river / . . . / a more violent desperation, mightier tombs", namely the Mahoning River next to which he grew up.
